What To Expect When Moving Overseas
November 16th, 2006 by A Managed BloggerWhen moving overseas, there are a lot of considerations to keep in mind. A family will have a house full of people, furniture, pets, and memories to move. There are a number of things to arrange:
- Pets – animals often need to be quarantined and/or vaccinated before moving countries. Look into the rules of the destination country for more information. In situations where a family will only be moving to a country for a few years, perhaps for school or a contract job, it may be best to leave a pet with a trusted relative.
- Vehicles – shipping a car or truck, besides the cost of transporting the vehicle due to its weight, can be prohibitive. It may be best to sell the car and buy a new one. If shipping a car is the best choice, sending it on a cargo ship will probably be the easiest choice. A car owner shipping the car will want to allow plenty of time to find a space for the car. Moving overseas may be easier with a familiar vehicle.
- People – the people are the easiest part to move. Give everyone in the family plenty of time to pack and to say their goodbyes.
- Furniture and other household items can easily be moved by ordering a cargo shipping container from a company such as www.allaroundmoving.com. All Around Moving can also arrange for storage of items that are not traveling, as well as a container share if a full container is not needed. In some situations, it may be easier to sell or store furniture, and either buy new furniture or rent a furnished suite. For longer or permanent moves, furniture will probably be moved as well.
When moving overseas to another country, it can be difficult to feel organized. To prevent losing or breaking items, keep moves organized. Keep track of all items by packing neatly and tightly. For an international move, a container might be needed. Pack this container tightly to prevent items shifting on board the ship or while being transported by truck.
It may seem strange to buy boxes, but when moving overseas, it can be best to make sure that a move is organized with the right materials to prevent problems loading, unloading, or transporting a household. Small boxes to hold books and other heavy items, and large boxes to pack lighter items such as linens, will make everything easy to pack, stack, and load. Keep lists – label each box with a number and with the room it will go in, and keep a master list of each box and what is in that box.
To make your move easier, pack your luggage with all the things you will need immediately upon arrival. You may be too tired after your flight to unpack a box to locate your alarm clock, for example.
